Technological advancement is a topic that remains beyond the line of discussion- it is completely indisputable in the 21st century. However, it is also true that from ancient times to date, the education sector has witnessed a huge range of developments, changes, and advancements. Now, what if these two constantly developing sectors merge? The result has to be theatrical.

And so has happened. 

Technology has helped education grow in many ways. But this growth has not been equal for all. It has been easy and accessible for some, whereas for others, it has become more of an unachievable dream. To make the most of modern educational advancements, students need to have access to various technical tools and services like online assignment help. But unfortunately, the entire global population does not have equal access to technical facilities. At least, not yet. This creates a gap that is conventionally termed the ’DIGITAL DIVIDE’.

Here I will talk about the technical tools, their obvious benefits on education and whether or not it is bias-free.

The only good thing that Covid has brought is that it has spread awareness about the various technological implementations that can help education development.

  • Using technical advancements in classrooms can connect the students with the world beyond their imagination. 
  • Technology can bring a plethora of unimaginable opportunities to students’ threshold. 
  • Students get mindboggling areas of exploration in terms of creativity.
  • Not just textbooks, students these days have access to knowledge beyond textbooks. In just a few clicks, they get a massive amount of information. 
  • Access to learning opportunities is unprecedented in the modern tech blessed era.
  • Technology has expanded the prospects of communication. This, in return, has changed the traditional picture of classrooms. 
  • Students across the globe can collaborate on various global and international projects.
  • The walls of classrooms are no longer a barrier. Students can learn, communicate and work collaboratively with the use of technology.
  • Technology has influenced the role change of teachers and students. Earlier, teachers were the only source of information. But that is not the ultimate truth today. With information being easily accessible today, teachers are more like a guide to the students.
  • New age technology has made it easier for teachers to deliver their lectures. Preparation of instructional materials has become stress-free.

Amidst all these advantages that make education so much more developed than it initially was, the collaboration of education with growing technology has its own set of detriments as well.

Shortcomings of Technology in Education 

When we start thinking of the shortcomings of technology in education, the following are relevant – 

  • Technology has made education more expensive than before. 
  • No more simple tools like a book, pen and pencils are enough. To have impactful learning, students need way more than that, which is no way light on the pocket.
  • Not all teachers are tech-savvy. This is a huge concern. Earlier, being well equipped with information was more than enough. But it is not equally true today. Honestly, educators find it difficult to implement this modernisation of teaching techniques. 
  • There is constant competition between websites of getting better rankings; for the same, some websites have grown so desperate that they are putting up misleading information for more views. They do not even cross-check the accuracy of the information.
  • Access to the internet is no big task. This easy access has led to students having difficulties in concentrating and building their focus on productivity. Students do not necessarily use the gadgets for legit use. They use it for their recreation and leisure activities as well.

Critical Review 

Education has no doubt witnessed a lot of improvements and progressions by the grace of technology. But the real question is whether it is true for all students? Or has there been progression only for a certain section? This is the major drawback of this highly cherished technology collaboration with education.

If we see vividly, we can see that technology is not really free of bias. Rather, the connotation of technology and education has prominently brought into light the existing inequities. Additionally, it has hyped them in some or the other way. Technology makes learning easy, but not for all. Everybody in modern society cannot avail of technological tools and gadgets in the same way. Hence, unfortunately, some students remain abandoned by the tech blessing and stick to the traditional learning techniques.

Not all teachers are well accustomed to technical tools, and it becomes very difficult for them to adjust to these new techniques. In addition, they take a lot of time to adapt to the changes. Only then can they move forward and teach their students more effectively. 

Also, misuse of the internet by students is a huge problem. If you see carefully, you will realise that when technological progressions were included as a part of regular education, no steps were taken to control the shortcomings. Nobody thought how children from every sector of society would be able to access the tech tools to utilise them in their learning. Nobody bothered to think how the technophobic educators would cop with such huge changes in so a short period of time. No one even tried to check whether the information present on a website is genuine and authentic or not. 

It is high time that experts take a serious look at this. Besides bringing more and more new technical stuff, they must also find ways to make it easier to use for both the students and the educators. This will enhance the quality of the education provided. Moreover, there will be control over the resulting shortcomings with solutions in hand.

Wrapping up

The contribution of technology in making education more operative cannot be ignored. But this collaboration has not benefitted every child equally. Rather it has highlighted the inequities. It has also tagged along with some complications which are very new to deal with. The educators and the folks are still coping with the process of finding the apt solution. Hence, however good it might look, apparently, when you dive deep into the technical contributions to education, you will see that there exist too many dark areas. And this needs to be eradicated.
